Every year, color experts and paint manufacturers unveil the colors of the year. These influential hues set the bar high for visual aesthetics and reflect social trends.
This year, neutral tones are making a comeback, featuring warm off-whites and buttery hues. Sherwin-Williams and Glidden paint companies predict this move towards elegant tones by selecting honey-forward Limitless as their color of the year.
Pink
Paint brands are offering an assortment of pastel and bold hues this spring that exude optimism while drawing connections between nature and optimism. Glidden’s 2024 color of the year is Limitless, an earth-toned neutral shade which balances understated neutrals with pops of primary hues.
2024 Color Forecast Trends include warm, earthy browns like Sherwin-Williams’ Dark Auburn for an on-trend yet natural appearance. This shade features elements of both brick and burgundy hues for an on-trend yet comfortable aesthetic.
Soft lilac shades have also seen an upswing, such as those offered by Sherwin-Williams (HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Persimmon and Veranda Apricot Crush) as well as bolder blue hues like Pantone’s Color of the Year Peach Fuzz or Benjamin Moore Blue Nova that features night sky inspiration with intriguing mysticism.
Blue
Pinks and greens may take center stage in 2024, but blue hues will certainly make an impactful statement as well. Sherwin-Williams named Upward – an adaptable midtone blue – as its Color of the Year while C2 Paint selected an intense aqua shade dubbed Thermal as its hue of choice – both are inspired by nature that make striking accents or can even serve as full room painting projects.
Purple hues are also predicted to gain more popularity this year. Pressman notes that their rich, soothing hues pair perfectly with both pinks and blues to provide depth or vibrancy depending on the shade chosen for a palette.
Brown and earthy tones will remain popular trends in 2024, and paint companies such as Graham & Brown and Glidden (which dubbed honey-forward Limitless as their Color of the Year award winner) have already embraced this trend, noting its versatility as both wall-to-wall colors as well as furniture pieces repurposing.
Green
2024’s color trend of choice is an Earthy Olive Green hue inspired by natural elements, offering healing and recalibration benefits to its wearers. Soft black tones grounded on nature provide grounding while revitalizing sky blue or earthy olive green hues can offer rejuvenation to restore balance within.
Paint companies have recently unveiled colors evoking nature. Sherwin-Williams selected Upward, a light denim blue with gray undertones as their Color of the Year 2024; York Wallcoverings chose Bay Brown as their season’s favorite hue.
Warm neutrals such as Sherwin-Williams’ Dark Auburn or HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ Peach Fuzz are still trending strongly in 2024 as they create an ambience of comfort in the home. Additionally, earth tones such as browns and terracottas reflect our desire for sustainability and therefore must also feature in 2024 designs.
Black
Even though lighter hues tend to dominate fashion trends, bolder versions of popular hues such as pink and blue may emerge this season. Meanwhile, more neutral tones such as buttery brown are becoming increasingly fashionable.
Brown has made an unexpectedly strong comeback this year, appearing prominently at brands such as Loewe, Chanel, Givenchy and Max Mara runway shows and in paint color trends this year. Rusty reds and deep burgundies vie with classic chocolate hues for attention this season.
Persimmon–a sandy peach hue–was chosen by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams as its 2024 Color of the Year, offering a balance between energetic tangerine and neutral undertones; making it especially suited to living rooms and kitchens.
