Frizz can make life in front of the mirror frustratingly time consuming; but there are a few simple grooming strategies you can employ to reduce frizz and achieve healthy locks with manageability and smooth texture.
Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel after showering as this causes friction that lifts cuticles, leading to frizz and static. Instead, use a microfibre towel or an old cotton t-shirt for better drying results.
1. Use a Glycerin-Rich Shampoo and Conditioner
Glycerin is an all-natural humectant that draws moisture to your scalp, providing much-needed hydration in dry environments while creating frizz if humidity levels rise significantly. Therefore, only use products formulated with glycerin under ideal circumstances.
Glycerin can be beneficial to all hair types, but particularly beneficial to dry and damaged strands. Hydrating the scalp and repairing damage caused by heat styling tools, environmental factors and daily wear and tear is possible thanks to Glycerin.
Always look for shampoo and conditioner that contain high levels of glycerin. Additionally, use leave-in spray formulated with this substance as a smoothing tool, as it also acts as a protective barrier against style-ruining moisture. You could even make your own DIY glycerin spray at home using water in a spray bottle to mix glycerin with. But beware, as too much occlusiveness could lead to hair becoming oily or clumped together due to an abundance of this occlusive substance!
2. Skip the Shampoo
Always choose a shampoo with low levels of alkalinity or alcohol content as these can dry out hair cuticles and open them up, leading to frizz and tangle formation.
Try washing your hair two to three times every week; this will preserve its natural oils.
If you must wash it more frequently, try choosing a shampoo with added moisturizers or just conditioner (don’t forget to oil first!)!
Towel dry your hair gently. Rough towels can damage your cuticles and increase frizz. Instead, try using a microfiber towel or old cotton t-shirt that won’t pull on it too harshly. When blow-drying, utilize a diffuser attachment for maximum heat and direct air reduction. Also remember to get regular trims; ask your stylist how frequently this should happen for your individual hair type; frizz can often stem from split ends that migrate up the strands causing further breakage and damage – get regular trims too if required!
3. Use a Moisturizing Dry Oil
Flowers are in full bloom, temperatures are rising–and frizz is in full swing. But don’t despair! By following an effective routine, you can effectively tackle frizz and maintain strong, healthy locks.
Lacking moisture causes hair to be rough, dry and susceptible to tangles, static electricity and brittle ends. Applying products like hair oil can moisturize hair cuticles while smoothing frizz and flyaways away from its cuticle, keeping frizz at bay and eliminating frizzies altogether.
Humid and wet weather compounds the problem by causing the hair cuticle to swell and rise instead of lying flat against each strand of hair; when this happens, strands no longer lie together as intended and start to separate, creating more frizz.
Reduce the frequency and intensity of brushing your hair each day to preserve its natural oils, which provide protection from frizz and damage. Instead, opt for using a detangler or leave-in conditioner while your locks are wet to gently untangle any tangles without damaging the outer layers of hair.
4. Try a Hair Mask
For optimal frizz-fighting results, deep conditioners such as hair masks may be your answer. By providing an abundance of hydration to the locks and softening them from within outward, these treatments help tame frizz from its source.
An effective hair mask contains various hydrating ingredients, from bananas to shea butter. Bananas contain natural oils, potassium, carbohydrates, vitamins and other hydrating agents which work to reduce frizz and make hair softer, while shea butter has natural anti-inflammatory properties which strengthen cuticles on hair strands while locking in moisture.
An effective leave-in conditioner that contains natural coconut oil will penetrate and smooth out the hair cuticle, offering maximum smoothing benefits. Simply spread a coin-sized amount through your mid lengths and ends, as needed, until smoothing is complete. In order to further prevent frizzing and dryness caused by heat styling tools, reduce exposure time.
